Excel is the most widely used spreadsheet in the modern world and with the team of developers Microsoft employs, arguably it is the richest, with features other spreadsheet producers emulate. In the past it was hobbled by the fact that spreadsheets produced by Excel could only be used in Excel. Wisely, Microsoft saw the writing on the wall and with the 2007 version that became a thing of the past. The Excel 2007 file format is based on open standards, which means that any program written to process data based on those standards will work with Excel 2007. In other words, you don't need to write special routines or use another program in the Microsoft Office system to handle your Excel 2007 data programatically.
Microsoft has also initiated a site that offers 'prototypes' - products that they refer to as projects - that are developed as somewhat of an experimental balloon to try out features that are not necessarily going to be implemented in their software. One such project is ChartAdvisor which analyses your data and chooses a selection of relevant charts from which you may preview and then choose. Not sure where the command you want is on the Ribbon? No problem, download Search Commands and it acts as your guide, not only in Excel, but also Word and Powerpoint and provides a list of options available based on your search.
